The Feeling of Commitment – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
How can we sense, right from the start, that we’re committed to a goal and that it will succeed?
Photo by AJ Jean on UnsplashWe often chase ambitious goals, and many of them get set with no real why and no passion behind them. Yet there’s an unmistakable feeling of commitment when something we set out to do tells us, firsthand, that success is on its way. Here’s how to recognize it and build it from the start.
Genuine commitment starts with clarity. Taking time to map the road ahead gives us our first glimpse of feelings that send strong signals of joy, passion and fear too. And when creativity opens up different ways to travel that road and produces ideas we’d never connected before, it builds an expectation that makes the next move obvious.
The next source of commitment is order. Getting things in order can seem hard, especially in environments as changeable as today’s, but we can always set a starting point and build as we go, learning fast and improving continuously. Vision supplies the inspiration, and every lesson and new result, however small, brings satisfaction and fuels commitment.
Then there’s focus. Habits form through practice, time and the benefits they bring. Focus, the power to aim at a goal without losing sight of the big picture, gives us a real return on all the energy we invest over a period of time. And in the end, focus also feeds the feeling of commitment.
Discomfort belongs to commitment too. Heading toward a new horizon where very little has been mapped means leaving every comfort zone behind. That’s exactly when we most need to trust the power of our vision, our abilities and our potential to give our best. Uncomfortable feelings are always a chance to test how committed we are to what we long for.

P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I’ve been Viewing: Chronic stress kills neurons, and exercise helps us recover them. An interview worth watching or listening to. Sport has always been part of my life and I value its benefits enormously, but this video made crystal clear what any routine I do does for my brain.
- What I’ve been Listening to: Limiting beliefs. An audio from the great Mario Alonso Puig. What happens when we spot a limiting belief? How do we spot one?
- What I’ve been Reading: Estados Unidos: La historia. Still with this great book. I’m at the fight over creating a central bank, and I’ve already passed President Andrew Jackson. An excellent work full of anecdotes, great stories and lessons for my future.
- What I’ve been Learning: Downsizing. In hard times like this pandemic, it’s difficult to keep traditional business models going. Cutting costs is clearly necessary, and all kinds of ideas come up. This article taught me a lot about what can be cut and what should always be a last resort.
