Keeping in Motion – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

What pace should we move at?

The world never stops moving, and change comes with everything that moves along with it. We are change, and life reminds us every day how much it matters to keep moving. Uncertainty can lead to overthinking and, from there, to standing still (the famous paralysis by analysis). Here are my thoughts on how movement lets us reinvent ourselves.

Great discoveries have come from curiosity and from humanity’s age-old refusal to stay stuck in one place. Moving can feel like walking a tightrope where anything might happen. So what kind of focus, and what kind of movement, lead us to solutions and fresh ways of seeing life?

One kind of movement rests on two essentials: Vision and Passion. A vision is often blurry at first, and what lights it is passion: complete confidence in what lives inside us, the lever behind every step. Vision comes first, and moving with passion sharpens our aim each time we dare to try, get it wrong, learn and try again.

So what makes us stop longer than we should? Part of it is unfounded fear, and part is the either-or mindset we live in. Fear usually grows out of things that have never happened and exist only in our heads, and out of giving more weight to what comes from outside than to what comes from within. When our eyes, focus and awareness are fixed on what we want to achieve, moving in that direction becomes constant and pays off in every way. Above all, we start trusting our abilities and the potential we carry, and we spend our energy on the present, on what’s in our hands right now.

Does that mean we should never stop? Of course not. We need to make room for pauses with a clear intention, so we come back stronger, energized and fully aware of what’s ahead. The world moves at an exhausting, demanding speed that calls for our very best. Keeping up with it is impossible. What we can do is find a pace that keeps our own bicycle balanced.

"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving" (Albert Einstein, in a letter to his son Eduard)

P.S. This week’s VELA:

  • What I’ve been Viewing: The bombing of Dresden. I’ve loved history since I was very young, though I know I have gaps, in philosophy, the Greeks and Rome, for example. I’ll get to them. This Netflix series on World War II is excellent and full of historical detail, and this time I watched the tragic Dresden episode. Give it a look. It uses new techniques to colorize footage that used to be black and white.
  • What I’ve been Listening to: Everything is connected. A good interview with Dr. Mario Alonso Puig, whom I admire and listen to all the time. One line stayed with me: "judgments are the pure expression of prior conditioning".
  • What I’ve been Reading: Estados Unidos: La historia. Happily, still on the same book. Some days I only had time for two pages, but I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m at the annexation of Texas and California and the Gold Rush.
  • What I’ve been Learning: Leche de tigre. Anyone who knows me knows I love to cook. Peruvian cuisine is one of my favorites, and I admire it as much as the Peruvian friends life has given me. This is a video of a recipe I love, and I’m sharing it because I’m about to explore more Peruvian dishes.
