What Lies Beyond Limiting Beliefs? – ElPropósito2 min de lectura

The power of beliefs, how to work with them and how to unlock our full potential

"Asking" my past about my future success used to be a habit, and the answer was usually "you won’t be able to." "Searching" my past for my greatest successes, on the other hand, changes the picture completely. It inspires me and lets me think "yes, I can." The Royal Spanish Academy defines a belief as "an idea or thought assumed to be true."

The power we give a belief limits our potential. By potential I mean the capacity all of us have to achieve what we want or wish for. In my experience, unlocking it also depends on being able to think clearly and calmly, which is hard given the uncertainty and speed we live with.

So what can we do to become aware of the beliefs that limit us and unlock our potential?

  • Train the mind: meditation keeps us aware of the present, away from what already happened or hasn’t happened yet. The result is being able to think calmly and clearly when making decisions, stop procrastinating, ease anxiety, stress and discouragement and, above all, take action
  • Vision, mission and values: I see these together as the compass or purpose we all carry inside. They make us better human beings and are the source of determination and willpower to do what we need to do and get where we want to go
  • Priorities: focusing on what truly matters keeps us aligned with our purpose and lets us navigate the uncertainty and speed we live with. It also lets us put our resources into the activities that lead to the results we want and, above all, maximize our wellbeing

Here are some tools that have helped me move past many limiting beliefs:

  • Book: Ideas y creencias (Ideas and Beliefs), by philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. A book for understanding the tension between ideas and beliefs
  • Video: You Have to Pay for Your Wishes. An excellent resource on being willing to pay the price to take something from the world of our ideas into the real world
  • Coaching: a core principle of coaching is that people hold all the answers to their own lives. Among the many things coaching examines and challenges are limiting beliefs and our perceptions of reality. As a coach, I partner with people on this every day

Are you aware of your beliefs and how they limit you? How do you work with them and move past them?

Have a great week and a big hug,
