Destinations and Commitments – ElPropósito2 min de lectura
How the art of the possible and the impossible is defined
Photo by Joe Gardner on UnsplashAny destination will do when you don’t know where you’re going. But what happens when you do have a sense of the destination? When there’s inspiration behind your dreams, objectives and goals? When you’ve put your own intelligence to work? What’s the real difference between knowing where the boat is headed and not knowing?
We know that time, and therefore life, is one of our scarcest resources. Even so, it’s very common to get caught up in the daily whirlwind and pour much of our energy into tasks that do nothing to build our deepest aspirations.
A dream backed by action can become a great legacy, which is why purposeful action is the foundation of commitment to any big idea. Most of the time, actions lose strength as time goes on. Often that’s because we aren’t clear about the goal they’re building toward. Other times it comes down to something fundamental and structural: a lack of purpose.
Setting goals is a mix of science and art. On one hand, there’s a big advantage when goals are backed by a strategy that takes us from point A to point B toward a specific result. Another big advantage comes from repeatedly using strategies that have already worked for us and produce a positive result whenever we apply them.
The art of goals becomes science when we can keep reaching our goals consistently. At the start of any change we may be highly committed to the result. The key is to keep the vision, the values and, above all, the purpose of that change alive. Climbing toward the summit takes all the energy we have for the one thing that matters: reaching the top.
We’re all climbers, and we reach, and always will reach, the summit whenever we’re aware of the focus we need to invest our energy well. A high-performance climber needs high-performance strategies, but above all they need one thing: a life purpose aligned with the goal they want to reach. At the top, the sense of fulfillment is immense, and they know perfectly well what comes next: another summit.
