Shining in the Dark – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
The things that set us apart, even in the greatest uncertainty
Photo by Vincentiu Solomon on UnsplashSome organizations and people guide their steps in a way that seems extraordinary and hard to copy. Their results are exceptional, and life always rewards them with the best outcomes. In times as complex as these, what lets us shine and perform at our peak in everything we do? The answer is hard to find, let alone live by. It takes a special level of commitment.
To some extent, and over the course of our lives, we learn from our own lessons which strategies or principles usually bring positive results when we apply them. Having a set of strategies also shows us what lies within our power (and what doesn’t). It’s a resource that delivers the best results every time we use it.
The next level for shining is values. I like Mario Alonso Puig’s definition: "every time we live our values, they make us better human beings." In an organization, values represent the culture (both the one it wants and the one it actually lives). They also build the bridges between one decision and the next, and link them together. In other words, every time we let them guide us, the odds of success go up.
The other level, and the one I usually write about on Sundays, is Purpose. Like it or not, every team, organization and person carries at their core the purpose they’re in this world for. Knowing our purpose is almost an obligation, and it’s our great opportunity to set the course our life should follow.
Strategies, Values and Purpose are three ways to guide our lives so we can shine. Even in the darkest and most uncertain moments, any challenge becomes the battery that lights the way when our decisions rest on what is most fundamental and essential in us. We’re called to shine and give the best of who we are, and for that we need to know, and be aware of, what defines us and what we are.

- P.S. This week’s VELA (what I was Watching, Listening to, Reading and Learning):
- What I was Watching: SmartBox. A great project from my friend Francisco (Chico) Corzo, an innovative idea that’s here to stay. At its core, it has everything the "new normal" needs, a happy medium for all the companies caught in the uncertainty of the hybrid model, working from home vs the office. It’s a blend of both, and Chico (as I fondly call him) found a very special formula for it. Congratulations, Chico, on this wonderful project
– What I was Listening to: The magic of making sound. I’ve always been intrigued by many of the sounds in movies, cartoons and series. A great report on how many of them are created and recreated to bring characters and all sorts of elements to life, connecting with us and sparking our imagination
– What I was Reading: Beyond Order. I’ve gone back to it. It’s a book I’m giving a lot of effort and concentration. I highly recommend it, and I’m sure anyone who buys it will enjoy it
– What I was Learning: Siete estilos educativos (Seven educational styles). A video, also available as a podcast, that’s worth your attention. We all learn differently, and discovering our own style, and that of the people around us or those we meet along the way, is vital too, especially for nurturing relationships
