How Late Is Too Late to Start – ElPropósito2 min de lectura

The keys to taking that first step, or the first few

Daring is, and always has been, one of the cornerstones of human progress, sometimes to adapt to change and sometimes to challenge the status quo. Before we dare to do something there’s usually fear, worry, even anxiety. Yet one kind of decision follows curiosity. It springs from the natural instinct to explore and find out what lies beyond what we already hold in our hands.

The first step is essential, both to inspire the decisions that follow and to give us a sense of progress. Moving forward doesn’t always mean getting what we want. It also brings failures, false starts and even tears of frustration. The pressure we’re willing to take on for what we’ve set out to do, from the depths of who we are, is directly linked to the success we can reap. So how much pressure can we handle, and what makes us willing to handle it?

Along the same lines, the people around us and the environment we work in play a key role in the odds of success for any decision we take on. The quality of our relationships, and the support or words we hear in the first moments of that first step, shape the course of our thinking, now and for good. What a person or team starting something new wants most is to feel secure, and that security often comes from an outside voice that encourages (or discourages) and spurs them on.

Timing (which is what inspired this post) is also an ally. In my short experience I’ve concluded that, whatever your age, it’s NEVER too late to start. What we’re always late for, knowingly, is taking that first big step. Step 0 is the idea, the wanting, the "we want." Step 1 is organizing those ideas so that, even if the map is a bit blurry and the route isn’t entirely clear, as long as the vision and purpose are clear, all that’s missing is the courage to dare.

The latest decision of all is the one never made, the one that stays on paper or in the world of ideas. Even at the last moment of life, the courage of having dared to try is worth more than the attempt that never happened. Finally, a decision aligned with a purpose carries a unique surge of energy that we always need to turn into action. So it’s never too late to discover our purpose, and never too late to know which decisions we need to make to live in tune with it.
