Two ingredients for the year ahead

Discipline and patience.

One of the biggest obstacles between us and our goals is how committed we really are to the result. That commitment rests on two ingredients: the discipline to make things happen when they need to happen, and the patience to wait for the results. Both demand clarity about what actually depends on us. What does discipline get us? What capabilities do we build along the way, beyond the result itself? And why is it that when we stay consistent, we end up with more than we expected?

Habits are forged through discipline, yet they also need a spark of inspiration to stick. A habit comes from constant repetition; it never shows up on its own. That can sound dull if we are unclear about why we want it in our lives. The more consistent and coherent we are in chasing a result, the more naturally one essential habit takes shape: the habit of execution. A strategy succeeds because of how it is formulated, yet it is measured by how it is executed. Formulation is the science and execution is the art, and the art of carrying an objective through to the result is where, looking back, most of the discipline lives.

What does it take to do what needs doing, when it needs doing? Knowing that what we are doing is aligned with our purpose. That is the key to seeing our objectives clearly: they have to be in tune with our purpose. When they are out of tune, we waste opportunities, and above all time and resources, chasing something disconnected from the most important part of who we are.

The start of the year sets the tone and gives us the chance to define clear goals. It is up to us to put on paper the ideas we hold about the future, and to spell out, as clearly as we can, what will be different once we get there. The starting line is where we should be most aware of the discipline that brought us this far and the discipline we will need, day by day and hour by hour, to reach what we have set out to do.

Good luck in 2024. Let’s get to work on what is in our hands

With appreciation and all the best,
