What’s the Best Way to Make a Decision? – ElPropósito2 min de lectura
How to make the big decisions, and what they’re for (2-minute read)
Photo by Vladislav Babienko on UnsplashThe photo above reminds me of a passage from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland: "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat. "I don’t much care where," said Alice. "Then it doesn’t matter which way you go," said the Cat.
Sometimes it feels like a big decision has been forced on us, and the questions pile up: How do I make it? On what basis? How do I live with the uncertainty? How will it turn out? Who can I lean on? The good news is that the answers have always been inside us.
A good first step is recognizing that however tough the decision or the situation, some part of it works in our favor and opens the door to change. Ask yourself: What brought me to this point in my life? What would I change starting today, and what would I begin doing differently? A big decision will ask us to set priorities and focus our energy on what truly matters, on a result that rewards us for acting in line with our values and purpose.
The next step is finding the meaning behind the decision. What will guide my next big call? What result am I after? How will I keep clear on what I want and what I don’t? In the passage from Alice, what’s plainly missing is the why behind the decision. How often is that why missing from our own path? That "where I want to get to."
The paradox is that even when we know where we’re going, the road will bring uncertainty, frustration, fatigue, setbacks and mistakes. Part of enjoying the journey is learning from all of it. What from everything I’ve lived has brought me here? Deep down, we know that once we reach the goal, the reward will be worth it.
So if the answers are already inside us and we’ve found the meaning of the decision, what’s still standing between us and making it?
All the best, and have a powerful Monday,

P.S. A few recommendations for this week:
- Article: The Power of Hidden Teams, HBR. One of the best things I’ve ever read.
- Book: Daring Greatly, by Brené Brown. A wonderful writer I’ve just discovered, and I’m already on her second book.
- Video: Born to Run, Christopher McDougall’s TED Talk. One of the best talks I’ve seen on sports, and on running in particular. Well worth watching.
