The foundations and core pillars of a team

When values are shared, things go much better. When a purpose is shared, life flows more smoothly. When a clear direction, a clear north, is set, we all walk the same way. Being part of a team calls for a strong individual commitment to delivering results and, at the same time, a strong commitment to the team. That mindset takes a very particular kind of empathy, one that goes beyond who’s on the team and what makes each person unique. It takes practice to see the team as one.

Today, one of the biggest challenges many organizations face may be attracting and retaining talent. This decade began with an extremely hard test that pushed us to prioritize what truly matters, which usually turns out to be who we are, above what we do or have. The way we work is going through changes that are hard or impossible to manage for anyone without the right tools, and more and more they leave us reacting with no north and no direction.

In the worst moments of crisis, people, organizations and teams need direction. They need to see through the fog and manage themselves with great clarity, doing what’s in their hands to do. Messages fall flat when we can’t sketch out a clear purpose and draw on it in a crisis. Values, likewise, are one of the most powerful tools a leader has to set a team’s course.

Teams that share values, a purpose and clear rules are more likely to hold firm in the face of challenges. One of an organization’s greatest strengths is a basic plan that makes its actions clear. Even so, any plan gets forgotten once we lose the ability to guide our actions through values and purpose. Likewise, the best way to retain talent is to make sure everyone is clear on their own purpose and, as a result, that they all share the goal of all goals (the highest goal, the one we’ll never reach) for which the organization was created. It’s the reason for being in this world: The Purpose.

P.S. I dedicate this post to my brother Charlie. May life keep letting us share so many things together. A big hug.
