Work and Well-Being – ElPropósito4 min de lectura
Photo by Jordan Whitfield on UnsplashMost, if not all, of the peace of mind we long for comes from being sure we’re doing what’s in our hands to do. Anything else keeps us caught in a downward spiral of doing for the sake of doing and wanting for the sake of wanting. The other big source of well-being, peace or calm is awareness and responsibility. Once we know for sure what needs to be done, the next step is realizing that for things to happen, we have to own them. How do we go through life without knowing what’s within our reach? How do we identify everything we’re responsible for?
We usually know what needs to be done. If we dig a little deeper, we can find the answers. The big problem lies in the level of our conversations. We can have deep, reflective conversations that lead to far-reaching decisions, or shallow ones that never get off the ground. A productive conversation always takes on what troubles us most or what we want with all our strength. These are the conversations that resolve challenges and find solutions, reflections that bring peace and well-being. How can we have them?
To solve what puzzles us most or achieve what we dream of most, we have to act. Today, though, we need to act differently and more precisely, since it can feel as if we’re sailing alone through very rough waters. We need very specific solutions. What comes next, and will remain a treasure worth finding, is defining our values and a purpose. In the circumstances the world is going through, it will be hard to find peace and calm in what we do without a clear definition of the most fundamental foundations and pillars of any organization, group or team, and of ourselves.
Many transformations are born of crisis. If we want peace in times of turbulence or transformation, we need to be clear on where we’re going: a purpose. Along the way there will be plenty to do, and to stay confident in our purpose we need to act in tune with everything that’s ours to do, everything in our hands. Well-being comes from doing our part, and part of that is serving others. The roughest waters are navigated by being clear on the destination and sticking to a plan that gets us there.
We go off course when we’re unclear on the plan, our north and our values. In the long run, staying true to our purpose beats taking detours in search of an alternate route or a shortcut to our goals. The most productive conversations will never hand us an easy solution, or one that spares us the responsibility of working on it. A conversation that truly adds value to our lives always brings a deep, lasting satisfaction that leaves us better prepared for the next challenge.
Warm regards and all the best,

- P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I was watching: Michael Jackson’s Drummer Jonathan Moffett Performs "Beat It". I came across this online while working out and really liked it, especially for the shot of energy. His story is interesting
– What I was listening to: An interview with Rodolfo Hernández. Today a country I love dearly, where people who are family to me live, is about to elect a president. I hope democracy wins and that Colombia remains the prosperous, beautiful and special country I identify with so much, and where I have some of the best memories of my life. Fuerza Colombia
– What I was reading: La conquista de América contada para escépticos (The Conquest of America for Skeptics). I think it’s one of the best history books I’ve ever read. The depth and rigor of its sources go to a level I like more and more
– What I was learning: El lino (Linen). This channel is a great discovery and, for me, a gem of the web 🙂 I’m thrilled to have found it and, above all, to be learning so much, especially about crafts that have almost disappeared
