What’s New and Change – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
How can we get ahead of change and come through it?
Photo by Linus Nylund on UnsplashResistance peaks when change means completely overturning values, and culture with them. Many organizations fail to see in advance what radical transformations will involve. Perhaps the first question is: what drives us to such radical transformations in the first place? On one hand, we’re living through high volatility with a great need for leadership. On the other, we’re in great need of purpose.
Major transformations happen through leadership and commitment, two powerful tools that ultimately need purpose. Everyone involved in a change has to be clear on their purpose and on how it relates to the transformation at hand. Likewise, an organization trying to turn things around and get through rough waters has to see itself as a single entity with one purpose, more than a collection of employees, where every part has its own purpose aligned with that main one.
Any organization’s structures are weakest at the level of values. In the same way, a person or an entire country can collapse or come through depending on whether they build on their values and the culture they’re made of. A company, organization, country or person with no vision, values or mission lacks the main levers for shaping any strategy. Yet none of those levers has a reason to exist until purpose, the reason for being, is clear.
The biggest changes we need today rest on three essentials: purpose to make our north clear, freedom to act, and leadership as the force that carries the change through. The opposite is plain to see: corruption, manipulation, lies and a long list of ugly things that only make us lose hope in a better future.
Without a clear purpose, it’s hard for any person or organization to align its thinking and move forward cohesively, in a way that inspires (leadership). Without it, whatever new thing comes along can more easily slip in a change that meets no resistance, because what every such change lacks is purpose. Does your change have a clear purpose? Does the change you’re proposing have one? Are the people involved clear on their own purpose and on your organization’s?
Without change we wouldn’t exist, and without purpose change wouldn’t happen. So what has always existed is a purpose. Do you know yours?

- P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I was watching: CODA. A very good film with Eugenio Derbez, recommended by my sister María Reneé. What stands out most for me is what inclusion truly means in this film
– What I was listening to: Antonio Escohotado. Another great discovery for me in 2022, especially his ideas on drug legalization. What surprises me even more is how radically his views changed
– What I was reading: The Innovator’s DNA. A good book I just started this week
– What I was learning: The Messages from Water. A great documentary. What I take from it is "everything in this world vibrates" and how that relates to water. After watching it, I understand the power of words much more deeply
