What and Who Inspires Us? – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
When it comes to leadership, I think it’s important to talk about the qualities that most set a leader apart, and more specifically, what we see in someone who truly inspires. What gives a person that unique ability to make us feel special, make us willing to give our best and make us want to stay by their side? Read on.
The person who tells the truth inspires. Whatever the circumstances, they say what people often don’t want to hear. Reason speaks before interpretation. They ask when they don’t know something, and they see others as a support network, never as a threat that might expose what they don’t know. They accept not knowing as a chance to learn and grow.
The leader driven by values inspires. They know what makes them a better person every time they dare to be guided by what is most essential in them. Their values draw a clear line between right and wrong, and their decisions always end up serving both themselves and others.
The most inspiring of all is the one who knows their purpose. They know what they’re in this world for, and their footprint usually becomes a way of radiating an energy that inspires others to follow their own path. A leader with purpose encourages others to discover their own path, the essence of who they are. Because they have their own compass and know where their north points, they inspire others to follow them: they know where they’re going.
The leader who shares inspires. They know the essence of life is to give others a better light than the one that let them shine, and that in one way or another, that same light will always come back greater in quantity and quality. They share who they are, what they have, what they know and who they want to become. They share everything and keep only what is essential for living. They share the truth, their values and their purpose.
The one who keeps learning and stays curious inspires. They see everything that happens in their life as an opportunity to grow. They know that the person in front of them in a conversation also inspires them as a human being, teaches them something and sparks their curiosity to get to know them, and above all to support them in becoming a better person. Their curiosity drives their creativity, and every day they look for ways to innovate and leave a mark without even trying, simply through the humility that defines them.

P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I was Watching: Stop Thinking, Pay Attention. A great video, especially for learning how to give someone our full attention and get the most out of a conversation.
- What I was Listening to: What are the benefits of a WBS? A podcast by Liliana Buchtik, a leader in the project management world whom I had the chance to meet in Bogotá a couple of years ago while she taught one of her wonderful courses on Portfolio Management. If you’re interested in project, program and portfolio management, I highly recommend subscribing to her podcast.
- What I was Reading: La conquista de la voluntad. A great book that has changed a lot of what I knew about willpower, especially for those moments when I fall into a seemingly unshakable lull.
- What I was Learning: Self-knowledge. A great audio by Dr. Mario Alonso Puig, someone I admire. The journey of self-knowledge strikes me as a great tool for living, and for living better.
