Two Habits Before Any Goal – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
How rest and meditation make your goals reachable
Photo by Noah Grezlak on UnsplashAs the year winds down, I like to review the goals I set at its start. I look at my progress and draw conclusions, often with coaching tools, such as pinpointing the factors or strategies that got me to a goal and that I’d like to repeat. There’s also some groundwork before that review that may matter most of all. Read on to see what it is.
Assessing where each goal stands has to be realistic, honest, timely and focused on change. That takes self-reflection that explores how reaching your results connects to your wellbeing, a deep reflection that goes hand in hand with deep meditation.
Rest and meditation are two essential habits, for setting goals as much as for reaching and reviewing them. They’re endless sources of ideas and creativity, and in a hyperconnected world, making room for them is a real challenge.
Giving rest its due, meaning more than eight hours of sleep a night and truly stepping away from the daily routine, is the key to seeing any situation through fresh eyes. If you can also reach deep meditation in that time, you’ve made room to reflect more deeply on the year’s goals, objectives and purpose.
The power of meditation lies in focusing your thoughts on the here and now, and the power of rest lies in a fresh, open mind. Inspiration comes from the future we imagine, and the grit and drive to achieve something come from the changes we want to see and what that change means in our lives. The challenge is recognizing that, on any path, rest and meditation give us the space deep reflection needs.
Finally, every achievement or result of the year deserves a spirit of deep gratitude. Even amid the worst difficulties, there’s always a chance to meditate on everything that has happened over this long stretch and give thanks. Whatever the circumstances and results, there will always be lessons, new strategies and room to reflect on the future we long for.

P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I’ve been Viewing: Ray Dalio and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, talking about meditation, the world and India. A video worth watching more than once, with two figures I admire. I’ve read Ray Dalio, and after this video I follow India’s Prime Minister more and more, especially for the link between meditation and the great results his country has achieved.
- What I’ve been Listening to: Leaving comfort zones, from the Dear HBR podcast. There’s a lot of talk about leaving your comfort zone, and this episode is great for understanding how and why to do it. One of the best I’ve heard.
- What I’ve been Reading: The Leader You Want to Be. The author is a coach, and the book is worth reading, especially the chapter on Life Purpose, a subject I’m passionate about and the reason I love being a coach and speaking about it.
- What I’ve been Learning: How platform businesses are transforming strategy. Having read Matchmakers, I keep learning how platforms work and make money.
