How to Secure the Future of Teams – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

How a team’s values hold up when a new member joins

As a coach, I’ve seen firsthand how a team that defines and shares a Purpose starts behaving in ways never seen before, especially when it comes to results. Groups and teams differ in clear ways. Perhaps the most important is a team’s ability to take on new challenges guided by values that define the team as a whole and each member individually. Read on.

Defining a team’s Purpose is work coaches do in partnership with its members. The same goes for its values and working agreements. These three tools are the foundation for any result, goal or challenge a team takes on. Without them, much of the work stays stuck in planning and never gets executed, let alone closed successfully.

Defining those three tools is essential for any team, and the bigger challenge lies beyond them. The real test is building the team’s ability to carry its values into the future. For instance: what happens when a member has to leave and someone takes their place? How will the newcomer live the values, the purpose and the working agreements if they had no hand in creating them?

Why some companies endure and others don’t comes down to the ability they’ve built, deliberately and over time, for each new generation to live guided by and aligned with the company’s values. Telling the story of each value while keeping it intact takes work, special talent and a level of awareness that turns everyone into a guardian of the most precious thing a team or company has.

Moving from team to high-performance team is closely tied to Purpose, Values and working agreements. We talk more and more about agility, innovation, leadership and emotional intelligence. How do we build those skills? The main allies are time, motivation, practice and feedback, and that’s where coaching is doing great work around the world. #smartcoaching

This week’s VELA:

  • What I’ve been Viewing: The meaning of life. A video by the great Mario Alonso Puig. My takeaway: how such a complex subject can be explained in words so simple and clear that the meaning of life itself can be discovered at any moment.
  • What I’ve been Listening to: Pope Francis’s address at the Prayer Vigil of World Youth Day Panama 2019. My takeaway: the culture of abandonment and the feeling, at some point in life, that we have little to offer. A powerful message from Pope Francis to young people during his 2019 visit to Panama, well worth watching.
  • What I’ve been Reading: Success Comes from Affirming Your Potential. My takeaway: "When people believe in their capacity to grow, they make decisions that reflect this belief, such as investing in their potential, focusing on their unique strengths and discovering new paths to success and fulfillment that align with their core values and leadership goals."
  • What I’ve been Learning: William Penn. As I finish this post I’m in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania’s founder was William Penn. My takeaway: his tireless defense of civil liberties, his work guided by his values, and how those values have passed from generation to generation throughout this great country’s history and are still alive.
