Something I’ve always admired in others is their ability to live by their values and, above all, their leadership. That ability to always be first and always out in front, taking care of themselves and those around them, focused on leaving a better world. The person who always takes the leap without knowing whether they’ll make it, with rare courage and conviction, has a very special ability to make an impact and get results. What makes them want to do it and always be ready to give their best?

That willingness to dive in without knowing whether the water is cold, without even checking whether they can swim, is what makes me truly admire someone. Influence through example is unique and powerful, and it takes an enormous amount of preparation. A true leader inspires through actions and words, and the words matter less.

The best always go first, especially in the toughest, most demanding challenges. Ego and a need for the spotlight play no part in it. What defines them is their complete awareness of the need to set an example and make others feel that "yes, we can."

Life constantly throws challenges at us, and it also gives us every resource we need to get through them. The key ingredient is being the first to take responsibility for the destiny and future we want. Our ability to lead by example is already there. All we need is to awaken it by doing and building the things that excite us just by thinking about them.

Freedom, which does us so much good, has to come with action. Genuine action that always comes from within and seeks to make an impact on us and influence others. Any result we want will come from being the first to go after it, and its success will also depend on how well it aligns with our purpose.

Watching someone go first, even when we think they might fail, and then seeing them come out on top, is a unique moment. The explanation for such a leap is simply great confidence in their ability to reinvent themselves along the way and use every resource available. Going first leaves no one behind. It comes from caring so much about people that you’re always ready to give your best before wondering who else could do it. What could you dare to be first at today?

Warm regards,

Rodrigo Baccaro

  • P.S. This week’s VELA (what I was Watching, Listening to, Reading and Learning):
  • What I was Watching: Creating Psychological Safety at Work in a Knowledge Economy. A topic that keeps gaining relevance. How do you create the freedom and space where everyone can contribute their thoughts and their best selves? This video explains it very well
    – What I was Listening to: Reality and the Sacred. A great podcast from Jordan Peterson. I admire his ability to explain such philosophical topics, and in this episode especially the story of Jonah
    – What I was Reading: The Inner Game of Tennis by Tim Gallwey. One of the best books I’ve read since I trained as a Coach. Along with Sir John Whitmore’s Coaching for Performance, it’s one of the two books I revisit whenever I’m a coaching supervisor or attend a workshop, whether I’m organizing it or invited to it
    – What I was Learning: This week I once again had the chance to be a supervisor for the new Executive Coaching certification. Working alongside the people who trained me as a coach (Patricia Cauqui and Alfonso Medina) and my great colleagues Cynthia, Julio, Jonatan and the great Karol is a real learning experience. Thank you for so much in so little time. It’s always a pleasure and an honor to share this privilege with you. May life give us 100 more years to keep seeing each other
