How does a group become a team?

No team comes together overnight. A real team needs a clear north and, above all, clarity about its objectives. Objectives are often subjective. Some grow out of an idea with no foundation, others out of ideas that stand on solid ground. For an objective to be clear, it needs full conviction, and it needs to stay in the hands of the person who set it. Most of a team’s objectives are uneven, because each member brings different goals and different foundations for the way the team relates to one another.

More than anything, a team has to be clear about the main issues it must resolve. I usually call them objectives. Still, it never hurts for a team to translate those issues into concrete situations where it has to decide whether to act a certain way, so everyone knows where they stand. Many teams are unclear about the issues that matter most. How do the best teams take them on? By answering the most important question of all: why do we exist? Why are we here?

Throughout my career I have always counted on teams that backed me through the biggest and best challenges I have faced. So I encourage you to sit down with your team, look at the biggest challenges still ahead this year and ask yourselves one question: what would make us the best team we could be right now?

Warm regards and all the best,
