The first spark behind everything

One success strategy that has stuck with me is simply to start. Sometimes I get stuck on something, especially in my own head, and the idea never gets moving. I can’t count how many times that has happened, or how often analysis paralysis has kept me standing still. Many years ago, though, I found that the best move was just to take the first step.
We all know you can solve a problem in parts. I remember from my university calculus classes that there are several ways to integrate, and one of the most elegant is integration by parts. Today I find myself wondering how many goals we keep only in our heads and never act on, simply because we’re afraid of getting it wrong or don’t know where to begin.
Every beginning is hard, and like everything in life, it has a price. No idea has ever been put into practice without someone paying for it. Often we don’t realize the price is the time we have to invest, or the extra late nights it takes to give the idea the attention it deserves.
It’s very hard to start something without knowing its purpose, and part of my life goal is for us to start everything from our life purpose. Many organizations are very clear that their purpose is to serve the world in different ways. Most were created to solve a problem, and they’re still relevant today precisely because they never forgot their original purpose.
An idea stays an idea until we apply a force that moves it from rest. That change of state is what lets us start learning a great deal about the idea once we put it into practice. The best way to start is to give it that first push. Often it’s so small it’s hard to believe, and then, like a snowball (except this one won’t melt at the end of its run), the idea comes to life and keeps growing.
Human beings have a unique capacity when we set our minds to something in tune with our life purpose. There we find the willpower to overcome any challenge, however big it looks.
So if you feel stuck in doubt or analysis paralysis today, remember: you don’t need everything figured out to begin. You only need to take that first step, however small. Clarity comes along the way, never beforehand. Start. It won’t be easy, and it’s the only way to turn an idea into reality. The more that first step lines up with your purpose, the more energy you’ll find to keep going.
What idea do you have tucked away, waiting for that first push?
