Performance Reviews: What Are They For? – ElPropósito2 min de lectura
Where are the real chances to develop your team?
Photo by rawpixel.com from PexelsThis week the PMI (Project Management Institute) chapter in Guatemala invited me to give a talk on "The Value of Coaching in Project Management." For many years I’ve managed projects of different sizes across different industries, and a project is one of the clearest examples of teamwork there is.
Every project comes with complexity, from pinning down the idea to putting it into practice. One of the biggest success factors is building a team that sails toward the same goal, with all its different shades and colors.
This is usually the month to review last year’s results, set this year’s goals and assess performance. That makes it one of the best moments for leaders to set clear goals and explain how those goals support the strategy, to assess their people’s performance objectively and to give quality feedback that helps them grow. If you or your team are missing any of those three things, ask for them. It will improve their wellbeing and performance, and best of all, they’ll know where they’re headed.
According to PMI, an executive or team on a project needs technical, strategic and leadership skills. With clear goals, timely quality feedback and an objective performance review, you have a powerful tool for spotting which skills or focus areas need developing and what results to expect.
Here are some of the results I’ve seen once those skills are developed:
- Shared goals and values, better teamwork
- Work-life balance, personal organization
- Unlocking the team’s talent
- Better project management, better time management
- Self-confidence, motivation
- Effective communication
- Leadership, emotional intelligence
- Less team burnout, stronger interpersonal skills
- Sense of urgency, anticipation
What’s the return on investment for a project or company with those skills developed? How do you develop your team? How do you handle your team’s areas for improvement? Do you give and receive timely feedback? How do your work and your team’s work affect the strategic goals?
Have a great week, all the best,
