The moments that matter across the year

I grew up hearing, and practicing, the idea that rest doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means switching activities. This year I’m committing to more pauses, taken with more intention. Life often boils down to two or three activities that mean a great deal and drain us just as much: work, raising kids and, if we’re lucky, some exercise. Pauses are where reflection happens, and they should push us to think hard about our next steps.

A pause is a stop we take knowing that things will start again and we’ll pick up where we left off.

To make a real difference, a pause has to pull us completely out of what we’re doing. Reading does that for me. It’s been with me since I was a boy, and yet sometimes I drop it entirely. I don’t choose to; the daily grind just swallows me. That’s no excuse, simply the truth. The same thing can happen with exercise, food, sleep and the rest.

A pause that invites deep reflection should leave us fully recharged. There’s a reason "sharpen the saw" is one of Stephen Covey’s habits. In a world this crowded and flooded with information, taking a pause is hard. Even during the most basic moments, like a meal, we have a thousand things to do, or we invent some. So what can we do? Start by identifying what’s within our control so we can stop, catch our breath and simply be present. Something so simple, and so difficult, lets us reconnect with ourselves and with what truly matters. We often mistake a pause for procrastination or for idleness that’s gotten out of hand. A conscious pause is never wasted time. It’s a gift we give ourselves to realign with our purpose.

Meaningful pauses need to be planned. We can rarely improvise time to stop, but when we put those moments on the calendar as a priority, they actually happen. It can be as simple as blocking ten minutes a day to breathe deeply, take a walk or enjoy a meal with no screens. These moments may look small, yet their effect on our well-being runs deep.

Pauses don’t have to be solitary, either. We can share them with the people we love. A real conversation, a walk with a friend or some playtime with the kids can become pauses that feed us emotionally and strengthen our relationships.

In the end, pauses are the bridge between today and a more conscious, balanced future. They give us room to look at the road and decide, with greater clarity, how we want to keep going. Sharpening the saw prepares us for the challenges ahead and lets us enjoy them too. So this year my resolution is to take pauses, and to make them count!

Warm regards and all the best,
