Putting into words the most powerful thing we have

We all come into this world for something specific: to fulfill a purpose. In the same way, every organization where we bring talent together, whether a company, a team or anything else, is created for a purpose. Why is it so hard to act in step with a purpose? Why does it matter that we know ours? What would it be like to steer through 2024 by the lighthouse our purpose provides? At this point, can we really keep sailing without a compass?
Since ancient times, navigators have steered their ships toward a destination, and they still do. Nobody heads out to sea without at least a few basic instruments to navigate and, above all, to hold a course. Life is the same: if we want to arrive somewhere good, we have to know how to find our way and stay on course. For someone who doesn’t know where they are going, any destination will do, as the idea from Alice in Wonderland goes. The trouble is that nature follows a principle of energy efficiency, so the destination ends up being whatever costs the universe the least energy, and we wind up settling for whatever comes our way.
A destination with a set course takes careful calculations, fuel, resources, people and more. To achieve what we want, we first take a big step, the starting point: picturing what we imagine or want to reach. That simply means defining our objectives, and to do it well we need a lighthouse that tells us whether the course those objectives chart is the right one, the one that will take us where we want to go.
One question strikes me deeply: do we ever reach our purpose? Purpose is the final goal that will always be there and that we never quite reach. What we can do is find satisfaction in having a moral reference to turn to, one that tells us we are on the right course. That is why our purpose can never belong to anyone else. It is ours, unique and unmatched, and it is the key to settling any doubt about whether we are doing the right thing. A purpose holds a handful of words that, well put, give meaning to our existence. A vision needs a purpose to complete it, and so do values, a mission, a statement of commitment and a strategic plan. Everything has to be tied to a purpose.
As we close 2023 and open 2024, you will be glad to know there is a purpose in you, in your company and in your team, and that many of the results you hope for are far more likely if you dare, first, to discover that purpose and, second, to let it guide you.
Warm regards and all the best,

P.S. I dedicate this post to my son Juan Diego, who, in his brief time in this life, opened my eyes to the great purpose I have in this world. Through his intercession, I try to live it as fully as I can every day. I love you, and I will love you forever, my beautiful prince
