Living Without Fear – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

A strategy built on trust

Freedom is the path to living without fear, and that freedom must always come with responsibility. The opposite of freedom is having something or someone provide absolutely everything we need to live, and more, so that someone else takes charge of our destiny and future. That second option is easy because it takes no effort: we simply hand someone else the responsibility for our well-being. Given human nature, this creates a huge dilemma. We’re all different and unique, and no state can provide well-being to everyone equally. One of the great keys to moving forward in life is being clear about what’s in our hands to do (the first big step) to reach our dreams and goals. The next big step is taking to heart that the responsibility to work toward them, step by step, rests with us. A third step is what lets us live without fear, and that’s what I want to share now.

A life with purpose gives us the chance to do things well, on the right path toward excellence, both as individuals and as organizations that believe in and trust their purpose. Fear arises when we don’t know our compass, when we have no north and no purpose, when we’re in the dark. A company with no clear purpose, for instance, is more exposed to fraud, bribery and every kind of abuse against its people, its community and the world. Someone with a clear purpose, on the other hand, knows deep down that there’s a light (even if others try to lock it away) that will always shine and bring clarity to a dark road. A person guided by purpose knows that however dark things get, and however rough the times, they hold a tool, a lever to move their life.

If fear comes from walking in the dark, how simple and how profound it is to have tools that give us the light we so badly need. The catch is that knowing our purpose is only half of it. We also have to act, walk and live in line with it, and that may be the hardest part given the habits we’ve been living by. Becoming aware of all this sometimes calls for radical changes in how we do things, in our personal lives and in business, and sometimes for a slight course correction. Whether it’s a small adjustment or a radical change, what brings us peace day to day is knowing why we’re here. How many companies, people and organizations in the world don’t know why they’re here?

Purpose has no expiration date. It has always existed and always will, and it’s unique to each person and each organization. There’s a rare beauty in the nature of every human being and every organization in knowing that nothing and no one else has exactly the same purpose. Often our purpose is just waiting to be called, and sadly, in most cases it’s never discovered. It takes no enlightenment. It’s simply the answer to the question of why we’re here, why I’m here. If we want to live without fear, everything we do has to point toward our purpose, so it’s essential to know what we’re here for.

Warm regards and all the best,

P.S. I dedicate this post to my friend and brother Augusto Cordón on the passing of his beloved mother. May God receive her in His glory and may she intercede for all of us from there. A big, big hug, my friend.
