Four keys to asking ourselves powerful questions

In "How to Win the Day with a ROW," I described how I start my day and the strategies I use to get the most out of it. The "O" stands for organization: keeping a journal that helps me shape what I want to have done by the end of the day. The most valuable part of that step is the daily invitation to reflect.

These days, more than ever, our days take off at dizzying speed, flooded with information, to-dos and a calendar that seems to be set for us. There’s little room to share, talk and, above all, reflect, to pause for a moment along the way and take charge of our emotions, thoughts, ideas and, most of all, our actions.

Those few minutes of reflection are the perfect space to ask ourselves questions that raise our awareness, lift our thinking and, above all, focus or refocus our work. Answering them also builds a great habit: listening, and especially listening to ourselves. A good question has many benefits, and one of them is sparking reflection that inspires us.

So how do we ask ourselves questions that lead to that kind of reflection? Here are a few keys I think are worth putting into practice:

  • Think about the future: your own future and the vision you long for deep inside. From there, let your mind explore in ways that uncover new paths toward what you want.
  • Drop the self-criticism and self-censorship: think "we’ve always been able to," "we’re getting there" and "we’ll make it." The past should never dictate the future, and to truly feel that, we need to order our thoughts so they steer our reflections and answers toward the results we’re after.
  • Trust your potential: deep inside us are the answers to everything we long for and want to achieve. Fully aware of that, and asking the right questions, we eventually see every option for moving forward.
  • Make the space: busy as we are, we know how important it is to pause along the way. So make it a priority to have a place, and keep coming back to it, where you can meditate, reflect and ask yourself the powerful questions that inspire you and lead to answers for your challenges.

What’s your key or strategy for finding answers to your challenges? How aware are you of your own strategies? Would a short daily pause to reflect help you keep moving forward?

Have a great week, all the best,
