2021 is starting with plenty of hope, uncertainty and the drive to do much better than last year. It’s a mix of emotions, and the first word that comes to mind is help. At some point, every voyage needs supplies, a course, a strategy and a crew convinced about where it’s going. As a leader, you play a fundamental role in creating the clarity you need to know where to go.
The start of the year is an excellent time to give ourselves a hand: the kind that lets us find our course, or find it again, make decisions inspired by our values and, above all, gain clarity about how we see the year ahead.
It’s also a good time to set goals and objectives. Yet, as often happens, those goals can be forgotten after a couple of rounds of trying to reach them. One reason lies in how we define and set them, and in the kind of support we need along the way.
When we’re clear on our values and purpose, we have two essential tools for the inspiration we need every day as we work toward our goals. Coaching plays a key role as an enabler, partnering with us on our objectives (especially when they’re aligned with a purpose, your life purpose).
The chance to write the future is today, right after you finish reading this post. The steps we take toward a goal have always come with support, and always will. Ideally, that support shares the same values and, deep in its spirit, serves to make us better people. That is what good support is all about.
On the road to our goals, support and responsibility are two gears that must turn in perfect sync. Anyone willing to offer or accept help needs to be aware of this as a way to move forward and become a better person. On one side, the responsibility for reaching the goal remains personal. On the other, supporting or accompanying someone is, and will remain, a choice.
Coming out of such a challenging year, it’s vital to humbly accept that we need help, to ask for it and know whom to ask, and above all to open up and share, with real awareness, the future we want to reach. It’s also important to answer some key questions: What is that future for? What will be different once you’ve reached the goal? What is the best thing that could happen?
If someone comes to mind whom you could ask for support in achieving what you want with all your being, who is it? Can I walk alongside you?
May 2021 be the best year of your life.
Warm regards,

- What I was Watching: Soul. A Disney and Pixar movie. Very inspiring, with a clear message about our time on earth and what truly matters to do with it.
- What I was Listening to: Negotiation. A great podcast with Jordan Peterson and Chris Voss (former FBI hostage negotiator)
- What I was Reading: 12 Rules for Life. A book I couldn’t finish in 2020, so I’m still on it. It’s impossible to turn the pages without asking myself what I’m taking away from each one, or without underlining it (it’s the book I’ve underlined most). So I’m still enjoying this wonderful read.
- What I was Learning: The 7 most common mistakes when running on a treadmill. 2020 was a year of indoor cycling only. I hope to run outdoors more in 2021, or spend more time on the treadmill at the gym, and either way I want to improve my technique. I think there’s a race on my mind for this year.
