The year is nearly over, and there’s much to be thankful for

With the holidays and year-end celebrations around the corner, it’s a good time to look back and take careful stock of every blessing we received. We often undervalue gratitude and the real need to live thankfully: for life, for health and, above all, for the results we’re harvesting. What does gratitude mean? How does it connect to our life purpose? What’s a good gratitude practice we can use every day? These are the questions to ask if we want to live with joy and humility, knowing there are things we can control and things we can’t.

Gratitude invites us to give back. What moves me most is being grateful for all the things beyond our control that still turned out the way we hoped, or far better than we imagined. Giving back out of gratitude calls for a particular kind of action, and it shows up in countless ways in everything we do. That’s where people reveal their best selves. Giving is how we live gratitude fully, along with goodwill, good thoughts and good intentions.

Our lives are often full of joys and satisfactions, especially the ones that come from our own effort, passion and dedication. One gratitude practice I personally treasure is going to Mass on Sundays. It’s my space to thank God for every blessing and for the lessons of the week. It isn’t the only way to give thanks, of course, which raises an important question: thanks for what, and to whom?

We often forget to thank ourselves and reward ourselves in different ways. Good habits are a great source of constant gratitude. After a grueling workout, we forget how sluggish we felt that morning, and yet when we finish, we rarely stop to thank ourselves for showing up. That moment of satisfaction, of having shaken off stress, fatigue or worry, deserves recognition. The same goes for finishing a good book or sticking to an eating plan for a full week. Those are moments to give thanks and fully enjoy what we’ve accomplished.

Gratitude is a feeling and also a transformative habit that connects us with the best in ourselves and in the world around us. When we give thanks, we recognize the value of what we’ve received, whether it’s an achievement born of our effort or an unexpected blessing. Gratitude also lets us look ahead with hope and confidence, knowing each day brings new chances to learn, grow and share. So as this year draws to a close, I invite you to make gratitude a daily intention, a compass for your thoughts, words and actions. When we live gratefully, our life purpose lines up with a deep truth: we’re part of something bigger, and every moment counts.

Warm regards and all the best,
