Analysis paralysis

For a long time I was stuck. I overthought everything, to the point where nothing moved. My mind was racing, yet in real life nothing happened. Many people call it analysis paralysis, and it has been studied at length. One thing helped me break out of it and finally get moving: discovering my life purpose. How can a purpose help us step forward with confidence? What do we gain from decisions that stay true to it? Read on.
Analysis paralysis means overanalyzing a decision to the extreme. It is a habit we can fall into by trying to picture every possible outcome of a choice. The bottom line is simple: no decision gets made. However much we turn an issue over in our heads, nothing moves, and over time the problems keep growing.
The causes matter too. In my case, one was the anxiety decisions stirred up in me. Another was perfectionism: everything had to be flawless, and if it wasn’t, nothing got done and nothing got decided. Then there is fear of failure. Indecision is a limiting belief, an intense fear that we will fail, or that our idea is no good and will leave us worse off than we are now. The most critical factor of all, and perhaps the worst, is believing little or nothing in ourselves, which is directly tied to how well we know our life purpose. While we stay stuck, time passes, opportunities slip away and we slide into a downward spiral of stress, low self-esteem and frustration.
The first big step out of analysis paralysis is knowing our life purpose. The two pull in opposite directions: the more decisions I make, the less paralyzed I am. To make those decisions, though, we need solid ground to stand on, and that ground is purpose. Then come other ways to tackle the causes: accepting uncertainty, setting deadlines, delegating and, above all, taking small steps and making small decisions.
