Doing Strategically – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
When is more better?

Life comes packaged with a time limit that has, in a way, been given to us for free. Talents, aptitudes and abilities are tools for making the most of that time. They’re also unique traits of our personality, ones we can develop or improve as long as we’re aware of where we are today and where we want to go. Under what conditions is wanting more actually better?
Naturally, and without even thinking about it, we create things that let us live better, and that creative process often starts with an idea or a longing. Yet we also live surrounded by an extraordinary amount of stimuli that make us think well beyond what we actually need to live. In the gap between the two, there are many people with real clarity about their Life Purpose. Before taking something on, or wanting something just because, they can weigh it against the mission they’re in the world for.
Waking up every day wanting to do more and achieve more needs one extra ingredient: the habit of questioning that doing and having against what moves us, as human beings, to live in tune with our Purpose. Organizations build their strategy on their values, mission and vision. Everything in a strategic plan is aligned with, for example, the values. Anything that isn’t gets discarded right away (or should), precisely because resources are known to be limited (time, capital, people and so on).
Just as an organization guides its daily decisions and actions through its strategy, we as human beings should have a plan (even if only in our heads) that keeps us improving and, above all, takes us to the personal vision we’d like to reach. Basing our decisions on a personal purpose still lets us do and have, with the added ingredient of wellbeing, fulfillment and satisfaction. And when we reach the vision, we’ve fulfilled our mission, with our decisions guided by our values.
Time is a gift given to us with a limit, and as a gift it may be the greatest inheritance every human being is born with, which in short is life itself. It’s our responsibility to make good use of that gift, and an even greater one to try to discover what we’re in this world for. Once someone has discovered that (they know where they’re going and why), it’s easy to see how they make the most of every second to sharpen their skills and talents and get the most out of their decisions and their life.

P.S. This week’s VELA:
- What I was Watching: The Secret to Becoming Unstoppable. This video has made me more disciplined about writing my journal and my blog, putting my thoughts and ideas on paper. I’ve been a reader since I was a child, but writing is something I try to improve every day.
- What I was Listening to: Yuval Noah Harari. An interview on Tim Ferriss’s podcast with the author of the famous and excellent book Sapiens.
- What I was Reading: The Almanack of Naval Ravikant. This year I’ve been lucky with the books people have recommended to me. This is one of them, and I thank my friend Renato for sharing this great work, which is already making me a better person. I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s one of the good books 2020 is leaving me.
- What I was Learning: Wake turbulence. A post my friend José Carlos shared that genuinely surprised me. It’s worth taking the time to watch, and if you fly, it’s even more worth waiting and keeping proper distance during landing and takeoff.
