A Dream Followed by Action – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
When actions determine the fate of what we want
Photo by Linus Mimietz on UnsplashI’ve written many times about how much we should value our time and the quality of the relationships we want, and need, to have. I’ve also written a lot about our purpose in this world, about willpower, discipline, character and anxiety. I’ve tried to cover many topics that revolve around something hugely important, and today I realized that almost everything I write is really about action. What does it take for us to make up our minds and act?
Ideas stay in our heads, and they’ll stay there forever: the hug we didn’t give, the word we didn’t say, the call we avoided, the investment we didn’t dare make, the decision we never took. Like it or not, I believe life is made of time, resources and decisions. A company’s life cycle and strategy contain those same three ingredients, and as human beings we depend on them too.
Time is our main measure of progress on everything we set out to do. Resources, at the end of the day, are and always will be limited, whichever dimension we look at (financial, human and so on). And last, but certainly not least: DECISIONS.
A powerful way to make the most of our time is to make decisions with the resources at hand. We’ll hardly ever have all the time in the world to make our dreams come true, and we won’t have all the resources we’d like either. So the great constraint we can leverage is our own decisions.
What does it take to make decisions? That’s exactly what I love writing about: 1. Know your life’s purpose. 2. Make decisions in line with your life’s purpose. Our values are the platform our purpose is built on. Together with our purpose, they fuel any mission we take on and any vision we want to reach. Decisions never arrive on their own or stay in the world of ideas. A decision is a finished product, the main output of our brain when it reaches a conclusion and says: your turn to decide.
What decision would get you moving tomorrow in line with your life’s purpose?

P.S. I’m sorry there have been no VELAs these last two weeks. The VELA (Spanish for sail) is my second lever: it stands for what someone else has already done that pushes my boat forward. The REMO (oar) is everything within my own reach that helps me, just like the sail, reach my goals. This time, thank God, it’s been more oars than sails pushing my life along. That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped Watching, Listening to, Reading or Learning. On the learning side in particular, there’s something coming up with languages that I’m really excited about 🙂
