When to Change Course in Life and How to Know – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

How to recognize when you need to make a change

My life has been marked by magical, special moments when I’ve had to make decisions. I call them magical because, however hard the decision, it’s the signal I was waiting for, and it often shows up as the peace and balance I feel, or picture feeling, once I’ve made it. That peace and balance, in turn, come from how closely my decisions line up with my Life Purpose.

Today’s fast-changing, complex world demands that we unlock all our potential. Living with fear, frustration or anxiety, to name a few, keeps us from becoming our fullest selves, mainly because they drain energy we could pour into being and doing what we love. In a word, they steal our focus.

So how do we find the light that lets us focus, feel at peace and bring balance to our lives, especially when it’s time to decide? Fear and imbalance end when we find the answer we were looking for, specifically the one that will guide whatever path follows the decision. That answer can point in many directions, but one will always prove the most special of all: looking within.

Any decision that brings us closer to who we want to be will always bring firmness, focus and, above all, fulfillment. A dose of courage is, and always will be, the essential first ingredient in any decision. It takes a first spark, and courage is usually what sets off everything that follows. With courage everything changes, with courage there is leadership, with courage we own our lives.

Changing course is the constant of this century. Uncertainty is in style and here to stay. Learning to navigate it while still enjoying life has become everyone’s core challenge. The basic instruments for that journey, the ones that let us make the turns we need to keep living and feel we’re heading the right way, are inside us.

And trusting our potential, trusting our ability to find our own answers and trusting that life will always end well has never been more in style either.

Have a great week, and all the best,

P.S. Starting today, I’ll close every post with a VELA that sums up what I’ve been Viewing, Listening to, Reading and Learning (Viendo, Escuchando, Leyendo y Aprendiendo) during the week.

  • Viewing: Self-Transformation Through Mindfulness. A wonderful TED Talk on mindfulness and its impact on the brain, a practice I’m bringing into my life more and more deliberately.
  • Listening to: Masters of Business from Tony Robbins’s podcast. "Every business is 80% psychology and 20% mechanics/strategy".
  • Reading: On the Nature of the Gods by Marcus Tullius Cicero. "For nothing is so reckless and so unworthy of a wise man’s dignity and constancy as to hold false opinions or to defend without hesitation what has not been sufficiently investigated and understood".
  • Learning: How one school replaced punishment with meditation.
