The Hope for Something Better – ElPropósito2 min de lectura

How I have been able to trust that the best is yet to come

The greatest hardships are the ones that challenge us openly and in a very personal way. A situation that truly pushes us out of our comfort zone involves variables we can spot early and gradually train for, so we know how to get through, risk management being one example. But what do we do when something overwhelms us and there’s simply no solid strategy for moving forward? Here’s mine.

Today is a very special day in our home. We’re celebrating the baptism of our third child, Gabriel, and the beginning of his life in the Christian faith. Getting to this day has meant going through many experiences as a family, especially every single one since we lost our beloved son Juan Diego. Reaching this moment has come only from hope, and from faith that something better is always coming into our lives.

This post offers no step-by-step guide to losing a child. What it holds is the essence of a very hard situation for me and my family. It’s precisely in life’s hardest trials that we stop believing there’s a tomorrow, or that life still holds many good moments for us. COVID-19 is no exception. A year ago we were locked down with very little information about what would happen. We never imagined that a year later we’d still be looking for a way through.

The hardest trials exist, they’re real, and many of them were never created or designed to harm us. They have a fundamental purpose. They’re our greatest sources of learning and of strategies to learn, to become better citizens and, above all, to remind us to keep our feet on the ground, always. A situation, however difficult, is our biggest opportunity to develop the army of creative neurons we all have.

Trusting in a better future is hard, and trusting that we can build a better tomorrow is also risky. Trusting and having faith that the best is yet to come can seem completely dreamy or hard to believe. Yet the essence of strategy is the discipline of executing it. When we execute a strategy, we’re really carrying out the future vision of a plan, step by step, to reach a given point. In other words, we’re carrying out something that began as a dream and is now becoming reality. So what are we betting on? On the hope of a better tomorrow.
