What sets the size of our goals?

How do you notice the barriers that quietly erode your goals? Seeing my own barriers, and having the humility to accept them, has convinced me they serve one purpose: making me a better person. As a coach, I keep spotting the same barriers that wear down the goals people set and their wellbeing along with them. Keep reading to see how to work on this and what the future you want actually depends on.

Our ability to imagine the future is one of the most powerful things about being human. Planning it, and above all executing it, is what makes the difference. Yet the jump from planning to execution can stir up anxiety, fear, resistance and every flavor of negativity. That’s to be expected. We’re moving from point A to point B, which means stepping out of a comfort zone and leaving habits and routines behind.

So what sets the size of our goals, plans, ideas, dreams and ambitions? I’ve identified six success strategies that work just as well for individuals as for teams and companies:

  • Visions of the future: A firm belief that we can imagine and build the future we want. That’s where the purpose behind that future (the why) comes from, along with the brainstorming of the future we’re working toward.
  • Beliefs: Many are inherited, formed without our noticing and accepted as absolute truths, and they hold back our growth. A limiting belief is something we take as fact and assume we can’t overcome. Getting past one means widening our focus. Once we leave our comfort zone, we usually discover the belief was just our imagination keeping us small.
  • Decisions: Once we have a firm commitment, a clear why and a plan, and we’ve set our limiting beliefs aside, success comes down to execution. That means making decisions on time. "Strategy is about making choices." Michael Porter
  • Self-talk: Taking an honest look at how we talk to ourselves and where we’re acting from. Do we see ourselves with confidence, convinced the best is yet to come? Who are we listening to? Who do we go to for advice? Big changes call for big decisions, and many of them hinge on how we listen to ourselves and whom we choose to listen to.
  • Achievement and wellbeing: As time goes on and plans get executed, a virtuous cycle forms between the goals we reach (when they’re tied to a purpose) and the sense of fulfillment that follows. The key is to spell out, starting from our vision, exactly what we want to achieve.
  • Past successes: The only thing worth asking the past is which strategies got us to meaningful goals before. If we can see the approaches that worked in one situation, we can put them to work again today.

One last thought: what ties all six strategies together is responsibility. A leader’s success rests on their awareness and their ownership of imagining, planning and building their own future.
