Reinvention and Help – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
The key factors behind reinvention and timely help
Photo by David Pisnoy on UnsplashIn an emergency, our first instinct is to ask for help. Help comes in many forms and from many people, bringing much-needed relief or even saving our lives. It can be financial or emotional, but right now the relief we need most may be the kind that lets us reinvent ourselves. Here’s how reinvention and help connect.
Three things about help are worth keeping in mind: 1) timely help lets us be better prepared; 2) being clear on what the help is for gives us an inner motivator and shows us why we need it; 3) drawing out the lessons lets us build future strategies.
A world living through broken paradigms and frameworks will come out of this reinvented, stronger and more aware. Those of us in it need to write or rewrite our script in the same spirit and under the new rules already forming on the horizon. For most of us, that means reinventing ourselves on an unprecedented scale.
How we respond will depend on how badly circumstances disrupt our status quo. Today’s context all but pushes us out of our comfort zone and opens up a range of scenarios, each showing us the need to reinvent ourselves. The process has hard stages and plenty of lessons, and it also has a stage of reward.
Being clear about the role we play in that reinvention is vital to moving forward. In the end, responsibility for every decision right now is still, above all, individual. That makes finding timely help a strategic decision. It won’t guarantee a perfect response, but it starts clearing a path through the new jungle we’ll be walking again.
From the reinvention likely underway across every part of society (people, companies, institutions and more), we keep the lesson of preparation, reinvention and timely help. Our next steps should be guided by today’s lessons and by a future in which we remember how we got through this and came out renewed.
How much do you need to reinvent yourself right now? How will you do it?

This week’s VELA:
- What I’ve been Viewing: Coronavirus, Explained. A Netflix series on COVID-19. The interview with Bill Gates from May 2019 stood out. I’m amazed at how precisely he describes his view of a pandemic, and at how COVID-19 is following a script he understood so clearly. Also striking is how unprepared the whole world was.
- What I’ve been Listening to: Leading Through Grief in Life and Work. Loss takes many forms and stirs all kinds of emotions. This great podcast helped me take stock of my resilience, especially in hard times like these.
- What I’ve been Reading: Six Ways to Isolate like an Ironman. It’s been a year since my first Ironman (in memory of my son Juan Diego), and a lot has happened since, especially in keeping up my exercise habits. This article has been a big support during lockdown, especially with the struggles that can show up in the mind and with how to train without leaving the house.
- What I’ve been Learning: Mastering Case Teaching in online classes. A great resource for anyone teaching online. Because of COVID, this year I moved a master’s course I teach completely online, case discussions included. Leaning on Harvard as always, I think my technique keeps getting better.
I can think. I can wait. I can fast.
