Avenues for doing the right thing

What does it mean to walk the right path? How can we tell we are doing things right? There are many roads to the goal we want, and every one of them has two dimensions: the moral and the immoral. Any road that carries a dose of immorality runs against doing things right.

The path of purpose is unique, and it overlaps with the path of values. Living by values means putting your life in order. Many organizations miss the chance to do things right because they don’t trust that acting on their values will pay off. Is it easy? Of course not. Values put us on the right path. They light the road by day and by night, in calm and in storm, and they are timeless.

Are there alternatives? No. Any alternative to values is the wrong path. Taking it means driving against traffic, swimming against the current. It means doing things badly and living in constant unease, at odds with reason. The path of anti-values is the quick and easy one: every action that piles layer upon layer of embellishment to paint or explain a reality that doesn’t exist.

The right path means truly traveling streets and avenues we can pave ourselves through our own actions. The right path, the path of purpose and values, is our natural path. The best streets and avenues in any decision system lead straight back to our purpose and our values.
