Merry Christmas! – ElPropósito3 min de lectura
Today I write to say thank you and to reflect on life
Photo by Michael Voroshnin on UnsplashI decided to send my wishes a couple of days ahead of that wonderful season that is Christmas. This Sunday I want to thank God for guiding every word I write, and to thank you, my readers, because I owe this to you and you’re the reason I keep writing. Thank you for your comments, suggestions and good energy. God bless you and your families, and may this be the best Christmas of your lives.
This may be a very personal post, so thank you for bearing with me. A year ago, my wife and I were living the worst moment of our lives, the loss of our beloved second son, Juan Diego. After everything we’ve been through in these 365 days, celebrating Christmas while holding his memory close may be the biggest challenge I face.
I’m devoted to moments of reflection and to the quiet time for meditation we all need to carve out regularly. Much of what I write comes from those moments, and it often starts with a question. For instance: how do you celebrate in spite of the pain? The whole answer lies in my trust in God, His mercy and the infinite goodness He gives me every day to live guided by my Life Purpose.
So I invite you to make this Christmas a time to reflect and to value what truly matters. Set aside a little quiet time and ask yourself two questions: what really matters to me, and what can I do to build and strengthen what matters most? They give us the chance to renew what’s necessary and valuable, recharge, and focus on what makes us better people.
Last year, in my "Merry Christmas!" post, I invited you to make this a day for sharing, listening, being present and giving thanks, and to sum up everything we do on Christmas Day in one word: give. To let go of receiving altogether and simply do things that cost us nothing and mean the world to others.
Life has no summaries, magic formulas or recipes for living better. It’s an ongoing discovery of experiences, emotions, reflections and lessons on a road that, long or short, will always give us the chance to shine. We’re entering a special time of year when we can shine and share with others the light we carry in our hearts and in who we are.
Merry Christmas, God bless you, and my very best wishes always,
Rodrigo Baccaro
This week’s VELA:
- What I’ve been Viewing: How to educate for the challenges of the future. A great interview from BBVA’s #aprendamosjuntos collection with Alex Beard, educator and writer. My takeaway: our intelligence is the only unlimited thing we have, and how we use it to make the most of our potential will decide how we meet the challenges already here, such as the automation of work, climate change and globalization.
- What I’ve been Listening to: 11 Episodios Sinfónicos. A mega album by Gustavo Cerati, best played at full volume. Great Soda Stereo and Cerati songs performed with a symphony orchestra. It brings back fond memories of when I gave it as a gift to a great friend, my great friend.
- What I’ve been Reading: America: An Illustrated History. While organizing my library I found a set of Time magazines I bought long ago, and one very good issue covers recent US history. I’ve always loved history, and that great country’s story is one I find especially interesting.
- What I’ve been Learning: The Dewey Decimal System. How do you organize the books in your library? This wonderful system invented by Melvil Dewey has made my life much easier. You can download the Decimator app from the App Store.
