Gifts with a purpose
By Alejandra BaccaroYesterday I received one of the best gifts of my life: a painting that already means the world to me. I want to share a little of what it says and how I already sense it will guide me. I always write with one idea in mind: that the people and organizations I partner with as a coach should know their purpose. It’s the heart of the school where I trained as a coach: everything we do, or set out to do, should be in tune with our purpose. So the first step is answering the question: what is my purpose, or our purpose?
What I try to put into words, I now see in a painting, a gift that holds a piece of who I am in every brushstroke. Thinking about it, I reached two conclusions. First, how well someone can know another person, well enough to touch their heart forever with a gift like this. Second, the patience and the hours spent thinking about that person to create something so special.
Life gives us all kinds of gifts. There’s one we can give ourselves, a beautiful one that will always be there: discovering our life purpose, or remembering it. My life purpose is "To be the best father, husband and friend, working with passion, courage and meaning, living life knowing that everything ends with the right ending." Years ago, a coach I deeply respect and admire, Edgar Chamorro, partnered with me through an exercise that brought that statement to light, and it has been with me since day one. I try to remind myself of it constantly, in different ways. What I was missing, and now have, is this painting, which lets me wake up every day and remember that my lighthouse is right there.
Today I realize how much art can express, and for good. I find myself wondering what the life purpose was of so many painters and masters who left humanity such a great legacy. Today I received a gift turned work of art that reminds me my life has a true north, a lighthouse that will keep shining whatever storm comes, a light glowing deep inside me even when it sometimes seems about to go out. In the darkest, stormiest, most uncertain moments, our purpose will always light our path and our destination. All we have to do is follow it.
A hug and all the best,
Rodrigo Baccaro
P.S. I dedicate this post to my sister Alejandra, the artist who gave me this wonderful painting of the lighthouse. That lighthouse has always lit my life, and it is my purpose. Thank you for a gift that moved me to the core. I love you very much.
I also dedicate it to my son Gabriel, our miracle and one of the greatest gifts life could have given us. Happy birthday, son. May the 3 years you turn today become 100 more. I love you.
