How to Find Your Full and Fascinating Potential – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

Have you ever stopped to think how far you can go?

Challenges are a constant in my life. Many come from personal instinct, others from the normal flow of things. Either way, I hold on to the awareness I’ve built of my ability to win and, more often than not, to get past any obstacle.

In David Schwartz’s The Magic of Thinking Big I read: "Successful people, like successful businesses, live with these questions: How can I improve the quality of my performance? How can I do better?" There’s always another way to the goal, however distant and complex it seems, and our ability to get there lives in our potential.

Potential is the capacity all of us have to carry forward, develop and bring to life our thoughts, ideas, projects and challenges. It’s the ability to take countless thoughts and ideas and focus them on a shared vision.

How do we develop our full potential? Here are a few strategies:

  • A goal: we take steps until we set a goal, and that’s where the whole journey toward something we want begins. Inside every goal lives the why, and it’s what we turn to every single time a storm is coming, or we’re already in it: "Why am I doing this?" A powerful wave of motivation rises right away and shows us how to weather any blow.
  • Dedication: our potential is less a natural gift, like talent, and more a habit built through small steps and discipline. Taking one step every day, consistently, is what develops our greatest abilities. Dedication and talent dance together forever.
  • Push a little further: our ability to take one more step despite fatigue and difficulty is remarkable. With a goal in mind, we find paths we’ve never seen that let us beat any target. The key is to try with the goal in view, and most of the time we’ll go past it.
  • Remember, learn and improve: pushing a little further will surely teach us something. To uncover it, we can ask ourselves "What got me this far?" and "How did I do it?" Keep the answers as a living memory and use them as a guide for new challenges and for going further.
  • Awareness: these changes, usually an "I’ve realized I can" or "I’ve overcome something I thought was impossible," raise our level of awareness. As Carol Dweck says in Mindset, "the new beliefs take their place alongside the old ones, and as they become stronger, they give you a different way to think, feel, and act."
  • Humility: at the start I mentioned "the normal flow of things." Life has its own course and pace. Some things are in our control and others aren’t. Congratulations on everything we achieve with what’s in our hands. For whatever stays out of reach despite giving our all, I truly believe that cultivating humility develops an even greater potential.

I invite you to reflect: How much of your potential have you developed? Do you think you have more to give? How will you do it? What are the next steps in your life?

A big hug and have a great week,
