Courage and Meaning – ElPropósito2 min de lectura

Two words that carry a great virtue

Courage and meaning are two words that capture essential tools for achieving any purpose. What can we accomplish with what comes from the heart and from who we are? Courage comes from the Latin for heart, and meaning from our reason for being. When we act bravely and use that unique human ability to make sense of things, to reason, great things happen.

What sits at the opposite end of meaning and courage? I picture inaction at one extreme, and at the other an endless cycle of doing that only breeds frustration. In between stand those two great values, courage and meaning, which, practiced every day, keep us on a good path.

Where there is meaning there are values, and where there are values, things get done well. That’s why a deeply committed organization puts so much weight on big questions like its vision, its values and, these days, its purpose. Even so, every action plan and every daily task (carried out by people) needs those people to see meaning in their contribution and, above all, to give their best to what they do.

Courage, for instance, is one of the four cardinal virtues of Stoicism. It’s no accident that everything we do asks for heart, our best effort and our deepest passion if we want to reach real well-being. It isn’t easy when so much of our energy goes to covering basic needs. Still, courage and meaning are available to us whatever our circumstances.
