The order and alignment good decisions need

Two defining traits of human beings are the endless ideas we can imagine and the freedom to build the ones that bring us the most value. In the ocean of ideas living in our minds and in others’, it’s worth looking at how we bring enough order to them for them to take shape as concrete results. Ideas produce all kinds of outcomes, some very good and some very harmful. When things spring from a purpose, they end up serving us, the people around us and the world at large.

Freedom is one of the main ingredients that allow any purpose to exist, whether it belongs to a person, a team or an organization. It’s what moves each of us, through reason, action, effort and discipline, to build everything we want, ideally in line with our purpose. The alternative is drifting through the world with no direction at all. Picture an organization that owns its actions and challenges its status quo by driving initiatives guided by purpose, values and strategy. It shows clearly how order gives direction to the countless decisions that come up there every day.

The order that comes with a purpose-driven life leaves our freedom intact. What it adds is the direction our actions need to use our resources well (which, for individuals, often means time). When we start asking whether our thoughts, decisions and actions line up with something higher, like a vision or a purpose, we get the answers we need to know whether we’re on the right path. No purpose gives meaning without action and without owning the final result. Sooner or later, one of our scarcest resources, time, forces drastic decisions, sudden turns of the wheel, and those are rarely the best ones.

Among countless decisions, it matters to know which ones are best. Can we predict whether they’ll be perfect? Definitely not. What’s certain is that starting something convinced it gives meaning to what we do is very different from starting just to start. Can the results be the same? I’d venture that many decisions not born of purpose may well exceed expectations. Over the long run, though, that approach lacks the consistency of decisions born of purpose.

Warm regards and all the best,

P.S. I dedicate this post to my parents for all the love they give us. Among my countless decisions, I hope I can always bring my life the order it needs to make you proud. I love you both.
