Clarity of ideas and communication

Bringing clarity to ideas has become a real leadership challenge. Communicating assertively is turning into a monumental task: we have to express well both what we think and how we say it. One of a good leader’s most important skills is the ability to communicate. So what role does convergence play in communication? How does divergence relate to clarity? Why does a team or a person need a point of convergence to communicate better?
Ideas need something to be tested against, and I firmly believe the best test is our purpose. Before reaching for that compass, though, we need an action plan. The action plan is where every idea aimed at solving a problem has to come together. As human beings we have an infinite capacity to imagine and to build unimaginable worlds in our minds. That capacity is the source of our power to create, and to destroy. So it matters to understand why, once our ideas are ordered and brought together, we absolutely must test them against something, and that something is purpose.
Order reflects how consistent our ideas and actions are. A team without purpose can be chaotic. Up to a point, chaos helps generate ideas, yet there comes a moment when those ideas need order. Divergence means nothing ever gets started, or everything is left half done. Convergence makes things happen. Order also shows commitment and a genuine wish to bring clarity.
Clarity is one of the words we hear most these days. We need clarity for the present and for the future, and often, even with our ideas in order and a plan in place, we still need a clearer view of whether what we came up with will work. Convergence is the essence of good communication, and clear ideas are where assertiveness does its best work. Much of real clarity comes down to good communication. One of the great leadership qualities of this century is, and will remain, the ability to listen so we can communicate better, especially our ideas.
