A team’s muscle
https://unsplash.com/photos/ABizE8CQtAcExecution is vital to delivering any plan. Along the way, making things happen can come at a very high cost, and the long-term aftereffects can be hard to undo. Teams face all kinds of challenges as they come together and get clear on their long-term plans. A cornerstone of disciplined execution is a defined purpose that guides the team over time and lets it bring out the best of its capabilities.
What does it mean for a team to bring out the best of its capabilities? The talents of each member set a starting point for who each person is. That alone doesn’t guarantee those capabilities will be put at the team’s service and blended so the team can operate as one. An individual can set out to give their best at a given moment in life, guided by a firm purpose and clear objectives. For that same person to do it within a team, though, every member needs to be clear on at least one shared purpose and the shared objectives.
How do you measure a team’s capabilities? A team at its full potential delivers results consistently and keeps a balance between what it commits to deliver with discipline and its vision of the future. A strategic plan gives an organization or a team guidelines on where to head. The challenge is aligning capabilities to deliver that plan, or building whatever is missing, especially the Team’s own capability.
A team’s capabilities have to be developed. They are its strongest muscle, and like any muscle they can be trained. Keep in mind, though, that just as a muscle can be built up, it also has a limit to the strain it can take. Teams need time to reflect. Lessons learned are the best way to look back on everything they have done well, and the best exercise for keeping their capabilities growing to the full.
