A Special Life – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

What makes a day and a life special?

Time flies, and it’s one of our scarcest resources. Days slip by unnoticed when we’re caught up in the whirlwind of everyday life. Bringing that whirlwind in line with our purpose is a big challenge, one we all wrestle with at some point, and more than once we’ve asked ourselves: how can I organize my life, my activities and my actions so they move in my own direction?

Organizations, too, live day-to-day routines that don’t truly represent who they are, and it all comes down to values and purpose. Living a special life applies to individuals, and equally to work teams, companies and every kind of organization. All their members want, in some way, to belong, and to have that sense of belonging returned. One great way to get there is when purposes are aligned and shared values are actually lived.

A day is special to the extent that there’s a balance between what we long for and what we actually achieve. It also becomes special through the quality of the relationships in the networks we move in, the contacts we make and the people we surround ourselves with. Yet something goes beyond getting things done or being around good people every day. Deep down, we always want a life with meaning and purpose, and what gives every day its flavor is living in harmony with our life purpose.

Our friendships, our daily work and the actions we take consistently all show up in our wellbeing when we can feel, every day, that we’re on the right track. Despite the difficulties and challenges, one gift we can give ourselves is knowing where we’re headed and trusting that tomorrow there will always be a chance to do better. Today we gave 100 percent, and tomorrow, tired as we may be, we can give 200.

Attitude, discipline and consistency are values that refine our day-to-day. Our habits live inside those values and are built with them. Add the knowledge that we’re walking in the right direction, and any decision, objective or goal will make each day special, whether that means acting as a team, acting as an organization, or being willing to give everything, at every moment and at any hour.

With a clear direction and a conscious effort to keep life in balance, we start to notice the small details that turn what once felt overwhelming into a path full of meaning, where the harvest is steady and abundant. I hope this is a good week, and that mid-February brings plenty of work and, above all, a great deal of meaning and purpose for the rest of the year.

Warm regards,

P.S. This week’s VELA:

  • What I was Watching: Gold. A Netflix movie I watched this week with my wife. Good plot, and what struck me most is that it’s based on real events.
  • What I was Listening to: Relationships and Responsibilities. Mikhaila and Jordan Peterson interview the author of "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck", a book I read a couple of years ago during a mentoring relationship with someone who is now a close friend. Worth hearing, especially the part about values, which stood out most for me.
  • What I was Reading: A Pillar of Iron. A historical novel about the life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, a treasured inheritance from my mother-in-law. It had been sitting untouched for months (almost a year), and I finally picked it up again. It’s slow reading because of the level of detail, and a remarkable reconstruction of Rome at that time.
  • What I was Learning: Potential. We coaches talk about potential all the time, and this is a great video for understanding the concept.
