The Quarterly Review That Secures Your Year – ElPropósito3 min de lectura

What’s your vision for the future, where are you now and what will you do to get there?

The first quarter of 2019 is wrapping up, and a lot is on my mind. Above all, I see how much it mattered to start the year with plenty of challenges and plenty of enthusiasm, which I turned into goals and then into an annual plan that lets me check my results at any time. (This kind of planning works just as well for a person as for a company.)

Time is both a resource and a yardstick. It pays to frame the results we expect with this powerful tool, which costs nothing but is always scarce. It’s healthy to stop along the way every so often, measure progress and make the needed corrections, so the process itself becomes a source of calm and happiness.

Time flies, and the feeling only grows with age. So we have to make the most of every moment life gives us to build the future we want. At a midpoint check, such as a quarterly review, our reflection and corrections should be realistic and timely, and confirm that we’re still doing what’s in our control to stay on course.

How do we review our progress well? Here are a few steps:

  • Get clear: know where we’ve come from, where we are and where we’re headed. That shows how many resources we’ve invested so far, how much ground we’ve covered and how much energy we still need to finish. This is where we become fully aware of what we need, and how much of it, to reach our destination.
  • Purpose and goals: remember the original motivation, the longing and the reasons that make us work with passion, courage and meaning and give everything for the goals we want so badly. This is our main source of willpower, and whenever we dial that number, the voice on the other end will always have something positive to say.
  • Reprioritize and replan: the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world we live in throws hard challenges at us. We have to be realistic, fix what needs fixing and redesign our plan, or plans, to stay on course.
  • Believe and trust: in our limitless potential to find new paths and options. Throughout our lives, that potential has turned into creativity and many victories. Remember: we’ve always been able to, we’re getting there and we’ll make it.

Finally, a few questions to reflect on: How much of what I set out to do at the start of the year have I built? What will I do differently from today on to build what I want? What have I done in these three months that’s making me a better person? How have I helped make the world a better place?

Have a great week, all the best,

P.S. 1 An article I recommend: What Makes Some People More Productive Than Others

P.S. 2 The novel I’m reading this week: The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. A friend gave it to me, and it had been sitting on my shelf, watching me and waiting its turn, but its time has come. I think I’ve just opened a door much like the one Stieg Larsson opened for me with the Millennium series.
