I was struck to read that Monsanto’s digital and analytics capabilities were a key reason Bayer made a $62 billion offer for it.

Technology undoubtedly affects every person, industry and market in the world. The radical technological changes happening in agriculture center on the huge amounts of data that could always be captured, and on the tools now available to understand and analyze it, make decisions and capture value.

Data science, with its tools, technology and applications (big data and analytics), is also driving radical innovation in agriculture. Sophisticated statistical models (predictive, descriptive and optimization models, among others), built from advanced analysis of large amounts of data, are changing how production systems are managed, and the results are very encouraging.

Bringing technology into agriculture is a quantum leap, with big advantages and big challenges. The advantages I see:

2. Proper, efficient and targeted use of resources
3. Better understanding of the dynamics of the farming system and its environment
4. Better weed control and pesticide use
5. Disease prediction
6. A stronger focus on the world’s food needs and requirements
7. Preserving the planet

In agriculture, as in every other industry, the challenge is building strategies to make this wave of technology your own. That takes leaders who truly understand these technologies, bring others along and make them work in practice. Solutions built on advanced data analysis will give companies strong positions and very solid competitive advantages.

It’s the next revolution in agriculture. It’s THE future of agriculture, and it’s here to stay.
